GO KAN RYU KARATE

Go Kan Ryu karate (often abbreviated by GKR) is a form of Japanese Karate. It was founded in 1984 in South Australia by Robert Sullivan. Soon, the teachings of GKR Karate had spread across the country, and it is currently spreading to other parts of the world, such as the United States. Go Kan Ryu is a combination of the Goju Ryu and Shotokan styles of karate, the two styles Robert Sullivan trained in before founding his own style.

All the while we always thought that karate is just one style of martial art but there are many different styles of karate. Let us talk about some of these styles.

LEARNING KARATE - SHUTO UKE KOKUTSU DACHI ( KNIFE HAND BLOCK BACK STANCE) PART 2

Most karateka start practicing shuto uke (knife hand block) in kokutsu dachi (back stance), a few moths into their karate class training. Of all the basic karate moves, this is one of the hardest to master. Whether you are attending a karate dojo, or learning karate at home, I recommend you break the techniques down and repeat again and again. Start slowly and gradually build up to maximum speed.

KARATE MOVES - GEDAN BARAI OR DOWNWARD BLOCK

When you prepare to block gedan-barai, try and focus on bringing the elbow across the body strongly, then as you block, drive the elbow down and and across. Try and stay relaxed until the block lands, then kime! Breathe out sharply and tighten the muscles, as soon as you have tightened the muscles, relax the muscles, but keep your form.

The punch is practiced from heiko-dachi (natural stance), feet roughly shoulder width apart, toes facing forward, shoulders relaxed, crown of the head pushing up, stomach pushing down and chin pulled in. The weight should be evenly distributed over both legs. Try not to put the weight on the heels, instead the weight should be on the balls of the feet and big toes.
